The fact that gas is cheaper at Costco doesn't mean it's lower in quality. The company offers Kirkland Signature gasoline, which is formulated to improve vehicle performance and fuel economy. Costco says the gas also reduces emissions, making it better for the environment.

As gasoline prices fall, Costco does not lower prices at the same pace it raises them when prices are climbing. This allows the company to recoup some of the profits lost by doing the reverse when prices were rising.

Saving $0.28 per gallon on 417 gallons equals a total savings of $116.76. A basic Costco membership currently costs $60 a year ($65 starting in September), so the gas savings alone could be worth it if you happen to live in a pricier area.

Along with Memorial Day, Costco is also closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, New Year's Day, Labor Day, Easter and July 4.
